Puhkupillit, the wind band of the University of Jyväskylä, was founded in 1983. The band has approximately 30 more or less student-hearted musicians in its line-up. During the band’s existence both the players as well as the conductors have changed, but the affection for new Finnish wind band music has remained.
The band’s repertoire consists mainly of the material by former conductors Harri Mäntynen, Markku Viitasaari, and Jukka Viitasaari. Also, pieces of movie soundtracks and more traditional wind band arrangements are a part of the band’s repertoire.
The rehearsals take place at the Jyväskylä Normaalikoulu (Pitkäkatu 1, 40100 Jyväskylä) every Wednesday at 5 pm. Afterwards, the members of the band usually get together at Sohwi, a nearby bar, for a few beers. In addition to the weekly rehearsals, rehearsal camps, recording sessions, and of course, the gigs, are very important to the band.
The band is having its 30-year-anniversary concert on 20th April 2013 at Aalto-sali, Jyväskylä at 17:00. Tickets cost 15€/8€ and can be reserved via email.
